I went on a tour of the highlights of our solar system last night (put on by the local astronomical society and Port Phillip Council) and it was great fun – some real enthusiasts telling us all about our space neighbourhood and showing the sculptures you can walk to easily (we got as far as jupiter) before we went back and had a look through the telescope (the moon is so so beautiful!).
It was a clear night and even with the naked eye, you could see venus (top) and jupiter (below) lining up to make a smiley face with the moon!
- Venus, Jupiter and the Moon arrange themselves in the December Southern sky to make a smiley face!
- Uranus at the seafront
I still have to make it to Neptune and Pluto, but based on this one to one billion scale, they are way over in Port Melbourne and off my beaten track.
