Is Earth Hour worth doing?

We took the tram into Fed Square for the Earth Hour celebrations. Pedalled a little on the electricity-generating bike which was how the concert was powered. Enjoyed a drink by the river as the lights went out in the bar and on the Arts Centre across the water (Not the Casino sign, I noted). But it seemed like Melbourne’s heart wasn’t in it and I’m wondering if Earth Hour is counterproductive. If the response is lacklustre, it sends the wrong signal to the media and politicians. I’d like to think that just because a lot of people don’t  care about switching their lights out for an hour it doesn’t mean they don’t want our leaders to act against climate change. Earth Hour has become a distraction and perhaps too trivial to be effective now that the need for real sustained action has become more urgent.
